Alec Soth, of Magnum Photos asked 35 successful photographers for advice to give to young photographers. The piece of advice that stuck out to me:
Alex Webb
Photograph because you love doing it, because you absolutely have to do it, because the chief reward is going to be the process of doing it. Other rewards — recognition, financial remuneration — come to so few and are so fleeting. And even if you are somewhat successful, there will almost inevitably be stretches of time when you will be ignored, have little income, or — often — both. Certainly there are many other easier ways to make a living in this society. Take photography on as a passion, not a career.
Not sure how to take this. While I do enjoy photography, I wonder if it’s because photography isn’t my main source of income? Will all the joys of photography suddenly go away if I pursued it full-time? Will the passion die if I relied on photography to make a living? Should I keep photography a hobby instead of making it a business?

Sometimes, stories are best told through the unpublished selects. Here are just a few of the moments from the “Threesome” photoshoot that wasn’t supposed to be caught on camera.

Second weekend in a row shooting a colleague from the office and their significant other. Went out shooting with T-mac and his gorgeous fiance, Gretchen this morning at some country club on the west side (the name of the place escapes me at the moment). The fall colors are really working for the photographs I’ve been shooting lately.
Shot with 100mm f/2.0 & 20mm f/2.8
Minor Adjustments in Lightroom. No Photoshop. No cropping (yet).

Model: Erin from Option Model Management
Hair & Makeup: Anna Webber
Assistant: Kent St. John
Shot with 100mm f/5.6 on 20D. AB800 with Large Softbox directly above the model shooting down + ABR800 Ringflash.

Lookout for more photos with Erin from this shoot. A collaboration is in the works with a mighty talented illustrator. Will post pics when we’re done.
Here are a series of images from the shoot on Sunday with Rachelle, Q and Rocky (sporting the Christopher Bevan’s Tux). There are much more to be edited but this will hold you off for now. It was an interesting dynamic between the three to say the least. We were fortunate enough for Dr. Webber to allow us to take over his crib for a few hours. Anna Webber did the makeup. Shelby & Kent my right and left hand men helped with directing and assisted with lighting. Our original storyline went to shits when the other model flaked, but we just rolled with the punches and got some pretty images nonetheless.

Like every other one of my shoots, the clothes always find their way to the floor and the real fun begins
Just kidding. PG-13 only.
Here are some behind the scenes compliments of the talnted makeup artist/photographer: Anna.

This is what 7am looks like on a nippy Autumn morning in Portland. We shot for SPARQ Products on the Nike Campus. Can’t realease any of the shots from that shoot, but Kent managed to snap a few behind the scenes.
Shot with Profoto Lighting, 5D, 17-40L and 100mm f/2.

Went out this weekend for a quick e-session with Robin & Eric. Their wardrobe worked well with the fall colors of the NW. Both were very photogenic (even Eric). Thankfully Eric’s smashing good looks saved him from the awkwardness of taking pictures out in public.
Shot with 100mm f/2.0 & 20mm f/2.8
Minor Adjustments in Lightroom. No Photoshop. No cropping (yet).
